Learning

Children are self-motivated explorers, seek meaningful group interactions, and have a natural desire to grow and develop multiple intelligences. Powered by their innate curiosities, our students work through short-term and long-term projects directed by their ideas and further developed through collaboration with teachers and peers. Exposure to complex concepts and developing familiarity with tools are integral to learning.

The Role of Educators

The role of teacher is to facilitate deeper learning opportunities for children’s ideas. Our educators act with an honest investment of self and are guided by professional experiences in the field. Educators practice patient, reflective teaching based on the belief that children have intelligence and the ability to respond to respectful communication. Children in our school learn about themselves and the joy of exploring their world.

Curriculum

Our goal is to instill confidence and develop powerful young citizens who have the desire to ask questions, the skills to analyze, and the opportunity to act on their ideas.  We do not believe in forced time lines and standardized expectations. Our integrated approach means we discuss Literacy, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, and Arts utilizing symbolic childhood languages.

Science

We begin with exploration and experimentation in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. These are the fundamentals that all science is based. We practice familiarity with science vocabulary and documentation.

Creativity

Creativity is not taught, it can be practiced, nurtured, and expressed. The work of educators is to collaborate with students to provide them the opportunities to build their imagination library. We learn how to see our environment and participate in collaborative relationships.

Languages

We are born with the desire to communicate, to understand, and to be understood. In combination with teaching English literacy, Language Lab explores multiple languages through songs and play. 

Technology

We value real physical experiences in our curriculum and choose to view technology as a powerful educational tool and not a device for passive distraction. Our practice is to appropriately integrate the use of technology as a tool for education.

Music

More than just singing songs, we introduce beginning musical theory.  Our age-appropriate curriculum promotes the development of musical understanding in order to set the stage for later vocal and instrumental education.

Documentation

We are not only concerned about what a child does, but how they form their thoughts, how they develop their ideas, and how they express themselves. With photographs, videos, and student art, we track student’s progress by reflecting back on their work, reiterating, and refining. We document development with each student through active observation in order to reciprocate ideas, track progress, and support collaborations.
